I've just replaced the water impeller kit on my 1989 mariner 100 and I'm in the process of bolting the lower unit back on. The manual states that the unit must be in forward gear as well as the shifter box when installing. Problem is, when i bolt it up and shift into neutral, the prop still acts as if it where in forward. However, when i install the lower unit in neutral with the shifter in forward, the lower unit will shift into forward and neutral, but when the shifter is in reverse, i cannot move the prop in either direction. Arrrgh! Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I believe that in forward the prop should ratchet clockwise only, in neutral it should spin freely, and in reverse it should not move in either direction. Make sure you have the coil unhooked when spinning it in gear so it doesn't accidentally pop-start.(the key would have to be switched on, but be on the safe side anyway)

----------------
Husker fan!!!

That's exactly what i have now. I just seems a bit odd that in the reverse gear, resistance would be felt in both prop directions. Conter-intuitive, i suppose.

Thanks for your help Q-leap.

Go Big Red

Re: mariner 100 lower unit

I always replace the lower unit with the gearbox and unit in reverse. This is b/c of how the lower unit shifts.

When you turn the shift rod, you are turning a cam that is pushing on the propshaft, and effectively pushing the clutch into the forward or reverse gears. In reverse, the cam is at the fartest position, in neutral, it is about half way, and if the cam is at rest (not pushing at all) the lower unit is in forward. In other words, if you were to take the cam and shift rod out, the engine would always be in forward.

The reason I put mine into reverse is b/c when in forward, the cam has some slack, and the engine can be in foward when the cam is in many positions. It can only be in reverse in one postion. By putting it in reverse, I know that the shift shaft and lower unit will line up because there is only one position that they can all be in to achieve reverese.

I may be more confusing that helpful.

BTW, when mine is in reverse, you can move the prop freely about 1/8 to 1/4 a turn in either direction.

k

Mine worked the same way as far as when it turns and when it doesn't. Sounds like you may have it. I suggest putting on the muffs, firing it up, and making sure it is shifting properly prior to heading to the lake.
