Mariner 115 question

I have a 96 Mariner 115 outboard and about 4-5 times in the past couple of years it has failed to start back after use. Then after numerous cranking attempts and waiting, it would finally run again and be fine for many more uses. Most people (forums and word of mouth) suggested to me the Power pack was going bad. Recently it died for good and I had a mechanic to look at it and he said the stator was bad. I did pull the flywheel and my stator has that burned smell and I have ordered a replacements stator. My question is should I replace the Power pack as well or is the stator something that can cause intermittent problems like I have been having. Or is the stator a piece that either works or doesn't. I would like to fix it once and for all.....Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Mariner 115 question

Do you think I would be safe to replace the stator only or can a bad power pack damage the new stator if in fact it is bad as well......thanks
