Ok guys i bought this motor for a few hundred bucks to replace my 135 that got stolen. I also lost parts of my merc control box internals to that theif so i havent tried to crank the motor yet. All i was told about the motor is that it was ran in salt water at some point & that it ran but the carbs need adjusting or rebuilding, so my ? is where should i start with this motor? What kinda check list should go by & should i just sell the motor for parts rather than take the chance? Ive already pieced alot of the wiring back together where it was cut & wasnt connected where it should be. I cant afford to take it to a dealer. :( So im here looking for advice.

Run a compression check on it. If it has good compression, it's worth the bother to fix it up. If it doesn't, it's likely a bone.
Compression is checked at brisk cranking speed, all plugs out, throttle held open. Be sure the ignition is killed, or all the plug wires are grounded.

hope it helps

Thanks for your feedback John ive read alot of threads you have chimmed in on & you know your stuff. With a compression check i have to turn the engine over for about 3-4 seconds right w/o cranking it on each cylinder correct?

Yea stephen ive heard that. The 89 135 i had the mechanic said the stator was low but not shot yet but i did have to replace both power packs.
