Mariner 135

Hi guys just recently bought a CC with a Mariner 135 hp. Saturday was our first time testing it out and we had trouble starting the engine. We finally got it started and let it idle for about 10 minutes but as soon as we put the engine in drive we could not get the engine started again. We lost a sufficient amount of battery during the starting process. We called a mechanic and he charged the battery but could not get it to turn over again after a charge. It sounded like it was about to turn over but would not fully. I am worried about this and have heard a couple possibilities including spark plugs, fuel pumps etc. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Man boats leaking and motor wont start! Sorry to hear that man. That is a nasty combination. Do you know any RELIABLE history on the motor? If it were mine, Id do waterpump, lower unit oil, sparkplugs, fuel pump and carburetors. Honestly Id start with the carbs. Bar none the #1 issue with two stroke motors. What you can do to verify is squirt a little 2stroke mix into the carb throat and see if shell start. If she does then you have a fuel delivery issue (dirty carbs/fuel pumps)

Do compression test,check spark on all 6 cylinders with spark tester.Make sure fuel and tank are clean.Check your starting procedure,you probably have the push in key enrichener,make sure its working.

YES i feel like i bought a nightmare lol. The previous owner started the engine for me and ran it perfectly for a long time. It is just my luck. I plan on getting down to the boat this weekend and do some further investigating. I had a mechanic from Blackfoot look at it and he seemed like he wanted to replace everything on the engine. I had the feeling he was trying to take advantage of me and my lack of knowledge when it comes to boats being that I am a begginer. I wish I could find a reliable honest mechanic in the Highlands area that will not take advantage of me.

Well, there is a chance that that motor needs a full facelift.

My Mariner 150 has had fuel delivery issues as well, similar to what you're describing. Start with low hanging fruit - check all your fuel lines, primer bulb, hose barbs. One of my problems was the long fitting that attaches the fuel hose to the motor; it wouldn't seal properly so I had to replace it. I'd go ahead and replace the fuel pump and filter too. If that doesn't solve your problems, clean the carbs.

Sounds good I will keep you guys updated Thanks for all the helpful information I am going to try and replace all of these things on saturday I guess it can only help. I am very discouraged i was excited to finally take the boat out for the first time but literally just sat on the floating dock for 3 hours trying to find a solution. At first we thought we flooded the engine but it seems to be a bigger problem than that.

Was the boat IN the water? Did he take you for a ride?

A motor can start and run on half the cyls on the hose and you wouldn't have a clue that it has a problem.

Troubleshooting an outboard must be done in a logical progression.

Start with simple TESTING, other wise you can spend a boatload of money replacing parts before the motor runs acceptably.

K.I.S.S. It should become your way of life.

Test compression on all cyls, this proves the motor mechanically capable of running.

Next, test for a hot blue spark on each cyl that will arc across a 7/16 inch gap. This proves the ignition system capable of firing each cyl.

After that it's all fuel, clean the carbs, rebuild the fuel pump, replace any/all fuel hoses and primer bulb.

Then the tricky part, adjusting the carbs, linkage, and timing.

Get a FACTORY service manual, it spells everything out in a neat orderly manner.

Charlie, unfortunately he just hooked the hose up to it and ran it. Thank you for all the information you posted I truly appreciate all the help and hopefully by following your advice I can fix the problem. I will keep you guys updated I am hoping for the best.

Hey guys got some bad news after replacing both fuel filters the one that is a sierra fuel filter and the small cylinder one that is on the engine we could not get it to run. We also put a fuel stabilizer in and still had no luck starting the engine. It started for a short amount of time under a minute and than died. The engine sounded like it was right there about to start running but did not fully turn over. I feel like I am out of options now. Upon lifting the engine up and down it leaked a decent amount of fuel. I am guessing my next option is to bring it to a mechanic. Can anyone reccomend a reputable honest and reasonable mechanic that is close to the Atlantic highlands ? Thanks again Atleast I was able to get my $25 launching fee back at the ramp lol.

Hey guys this may sound like a stupid question but I am having trouble finding the carburetor. This is my first time owning a boat and I am not familiar with outboard engines. I have also provided some pictures of the outboard in hopes of being able to have someone point me in the right direction as to where the carb is located.

They are behind that black silencer/air box.
Your best buy is to get a Mercury service manual for your model.It will explain everything and you will learn a lot.

Check the links I've posted and see if your Service Manual is available for FREE. With the service manual you can check the spark and compression yourself. Even figuring the cost of a few tools, you can do this far cheaper than giving up and taking your boat into a shop.

We are here to help guide you to diagnose the problem and repair it yourself. All you need is a bit of determination to get it done right the first time, save a LOT of money, and get your hands a little bit dirty in the process.

Your first steps are to decide you want to do this, get the service manual, and start reading.

Merc has shut down the 1manual site, they have even removed the words and mercury logos

I looked and see that 1manual is now SELLING what looks like may be the generic service manual that covers ALL 2 strokes.

I also check the links in the iboats thread and the rapidshare links are still good, and still free.
