ok, I have been doing a swap on my Bayliner from the Force to a Mercury. All was wel and was running fine. I noticed that when the boat would sit for longer than 5 to 10 mins all the fuel would seem to run back into the tank. My research told me to replace the bulb and I did. I also thought why not rebuild the fuel pump while I was at it. I did these things and went to test and now it runs awesome, but I have to keep priming bulb to keep fuel in carbs. I can see fuel in filter just past pump, but I only assume somehow I botched fuel pump. When I installed new bulb from in boat tank to motor I could not get it to prime. I started the motor and ran for about 30 sec and then shut off. The bulb was almost full of fuel so I took to the lake and realized my new problem.

I noticed that different then the online parts breakdown of my serial 0A960720 that there was a spring that held in a retaining type clip for the valves in the fuel pump and mine had two screws. Did I tighten them too tight? Maybe put a valve in backwards? I have completely rebuilt my older 120 so I am mechanically inclined, yet have not found the obviuos solution for this one. Thanks, Tim

Re: Mariner 150 1988 Not getting fuel

If you put in an aftermarket bulb, not mercury or quicksilver, it's probably bad. Sounds like a bad primer bulb to me, both not priming, and fuel dropping back.

Another trick is to put a piece of clear tubing between the bulb and the engine and make sure you're not pulling in air somewhere.

If that's all good, then yer hunch is right.

hope it helps

Re: Mariner 150 1988 Not getting fuel

Forgive me, the original problem was fuel dropping back. So I purchased a quicksilver "blue hose" buld set. I replace from factory fuel port coming from the side of boat over to the factory twist plug of the mariner. This solved my fuel flowing back.....however before testing on the water I thought lets rebuild fuel pump as well. Now the only problem that exists is carbs draining bowls of fuel and having to manually pump bulb to fill them back up. I have a clear glass fuel filter just past the pump that keeps fuel in it. I really think it is the fuel pump not having pressure....yet I am just not sure how I goofed it? If I disconnect the outlet hose and it pumps fuel out into a bowl etc...is that good enough to say pump is working? I think I will try that here this afternoon as I just realized that would tell me whether or not it is pumping fuel at all. Again Thanks, Tim

I used to train field service engineers. The hardest thing to get into their noggin was this:

If you walk up to a running machine, do something to it, and it now does not run-----
It's what you did.

You'll find something missing or out of place.

Re: Mariner 150 1988 Not getting fuel

I knew it was something I had done, but could not figure out what it was. Luckily I saved all the gaskets from the original fuel pump. I picked up the old ones and BOOM what is this big black plastic piece attached to the old gasket?? Oh thats a piece I did not install back on! All I could do is laugh and be glad I had found the problem. So after rebuilding this engine and troubleshooting to find bad bias circuit, faulty trigger, weak stator, and fried advance module....which I chunked into the trash can. It is finally running like it is brand new. And oh the power it has with my torque shift prop!
