Well just got a call from my marine mechanic. Gave me the bad news that my gears are shot. Said he would try and find a rebuilt gear case. Is this the same thing as the lower unit. Since this is my first boat. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Of what direction i should go from here.

My marine mechanic said they are made in china and hard to find bol ts, anywashers ect for
Them any truth to this. I have a 1985 mariner 150 magnum. Gear ratio
1.78 verses 2.0 ratio. If i go the other route i have to replace my prop. Lower unit is about 1800-2000. Any suggestions

The housing is cast in china and a few other parts, they are assembled in the USA and 90% of the parts are a direct interchange.
f i go the other route i have to replace my prop.
Nah.. just use a blow out ring, allow you to run small hub prop on big case, Johnrude did it all the time with their shooter props..

Only replace it with the newer Xr6 unit has it has bigger pinion bearing... try this fellow in KY as I had good luck with him..

The SEI's are good lowers. My experience with them has been nothing but positive. Iv'e used two and never had any problems and if I did the warranty was top notch.

Xr6 unit looks almost identical to a Xr4 skeg is a little more swept and water intakes are 1/4" cast lower
