Hi Guys, first post and I'm looking forward to joining some of the very informative discussions that happen here. I have just purchased a 1982 Randall Craft 14 foot Jon which is equipped with a 1981/1982 Mariner 25M (25 HP) outboard. The trailer, boat, and outboard have been abused so I've got lots of restoration work to do before any of these components see the water.

Here is my question - This is one of the Japanese made Yamaha outboards (25M). In looking for parts, I have found several Yamaha parts on-line that appear to be exactly the same as those on my 1981/82 Mariner. The confusion/concern is that the earliest microfiche I can find for the Yamaha outboard is 1984. Several sites list/offer parts for Yamahas, but none go earlier than 1984. Is that the first year they were sold directly? Are 1981 Mariner parts really those same/exact parts as those used in the 1984 Yamaha in all aspects except color? I haven't found common part numbers for the Mercury/Mariner and Yamaha although they look identical is shape and fit. Taking advantage of the Yamaha parts availability will save me money - as long as they will fit.

Parts needed are motor mounts, brackets, linkages, cowling braces, and rubber grommets - things that are specific to the model, not universal.

Thanks! Gordon

I have an '82 30 HP that is pretty much the same motor. I have asked that question and not received a clear answer - I have read that the early '80's Mariners were basically late '70's Yamahas.

I get the hard to find parts for my motor here: http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/655.cfm

I'll be following this post to see if another answer on Yamaha parts compatibility comes up. :)

Ok, thanks for those inputs. I'll come back here and post what I find too.

The "mariner " was a joint effort between Mercury and Yamaha,
On your motor somewhere is a freeze plug or plate with an ID#
Always post it when looking for parts.

There are 16 different model 25hp. and a whole bunch of changes between the individual models.
Some parts fit ALL 25's and some only fit your app.
That's why the serial # is so important.
Good luck with your rebuild.
