Great site here guys and gals, keep up the good work.

At the moment I have just discovered oil leaking out of my outboard in between the prop and the casing? of the leg itself. I was wondering if this is normal for an outboard at all? What may be causing this? Is it a worst case? What may have to be fixed? Any help much appreciated.

Mariner 25hp, 98' model.

cheers

filfy

Re: Mariner 25HP Oil Leak!

Could be fuel/exhaust residue dripping down or the prop shaft seal is leaking. Drain and check your lower unit lube for signs of water intrusion. It will look milky if it has been mixed with water. Black lube is OK if it's been a while since you've changed it. Clear lube would be good, also. If that's OK, then I wouldn't worry about it. What color is it dripping?

At the moment it is dripping dark black. I had a smell and it just smells like 2-stroke, so I suppose that's good?

cheers

filfy
