Hi

I have recently brought my first river crusier with a Mariner 28 outboard.

I am conerned that when i try and put the engine into forward to reverse gear it makes and grinding noise (loud clicking) as if the gears are trying to connect etc.. Should i be concerned about this? The Broker told me the engine was service last month.

Also he has advise me to use a 100/1 fuel mix - is this correct? I managed to download a manual for the engine and that mentioned 50/1 mix. He explained that the 100/1 mix is designed for slow river cruising and for weekends trips?

Any advice will be appreicated
Regards

James

"Some" gear noise would be acceptable. Loud grinding clicking noises make me nervous. May be idleing a little high.
Do not run at 100/1 or you'll be making another purchase in the not too distant future. 50/1 as the manual states.

Dave..

Also, the motor is meant to be shifted briskly, do not ease it into gear.... and ditto... use 50 to 1...

Re: Mariner 28 advice

Hi

Thanks for the tips: I am going to take the boat of the water and check the grease in the gearbox.

I thought 100/1 was abit too lean. If the grease is ok - what else can i check to do to reduce the gear shift change noise. Do i move into another gear quickly (forward or reverse).

Many Thanks

J
