Hi, I am new to boats and need a little help.

I have a mariner 40hp two stroke, I think its a bout 1989/90

It runs well in forward but when bringing it back to neutral and then shifting into reverse it crunches, it does go into reverse thought.

Any ideas?

thankyou

Re: Mariner 40 two stroke reverse crunching

A slight bit of chattering when changing gears is normal. What you need to do is quickly change gears. Moving the lever slowly causes the clutch dogs in the lower unit to chatter and eventually rounds off the ears and the lower unit will jump out of gear. I really feel there is no problem. Don't be so cautious when shifting. Do it quickly. If there are crunching/chattering noises after completing the shift then there is something wrong in the lower unit.
