I just got back from the lake...with the trolling motor
>charged this time!!! Same problem: I did two runs stopped
>the boat for fifteen minutes between each run and on the
>third one, the motor was harder to start but started. When I
>tried to put the motor in gear to move forward it died!
>everytime I tried. So to to summarize: I get plenty of
>power when pushing the handle in neutral back and forth:
>but when I try to switch in gear, no power, the engine dies!
> I have new tank, new hose, two rebuilt and clean carburators,
>new spark plugs and still the same problem! I talked to Ron
>this afternoon: he thinks it maybe a short somewhere and
>may be something in the starter box (where the handle to
>shift and run the boat is located);could be electrical or
>air leak somewhere! What do you think?
>
>So much for good news... Any idea where I should be looking?

What is the condition of the primer bulb when the motor dies?

Have you tried running it with the gas cap on the tank open?

Jager, I think he's asking is the primer bulb collasped when the engine dies. I had the same thing happen to me on my 50 Mariner. The vent on the gas cap got tightened and after awhile the motor ran terrible. Loosened the vent screw, ran normal. Just my 2 cents.

I open the vent to the maximun everytime I run the boat. The tanks are new. I will check the prime bulb. Anything else?

Thanks

Basic question- Are you getting a pee stream? It sounds like you might be overheating and the engine tightening up.

No this part is OK! The motor does nor appear overheating. What about the jets, could their need some adjustment?

Thanks!

Define 'hard to start'.

My merc 50's (I've had 5) have always been a little slow to start after 15 minutes of standing from being run to operating temp. I've always put it down to them not having a variable choke on the electric start ones and they cool down quite fast-the pullstart was a load easier to fire up at 1/4 choke when its been standing for 15 mins.
