Hi folks, may i start by saying how stoked i am that i stumbled upon this Fantastic forum and web site. I live in Sydney Australia and spent half my youth living on the ocean and being around boats. I love it and so it appears, do you. Most excellent.

I have recently bought a great little Mariner 5hp ( 661S 020311 ) which i learnt from here is a 1979 motor. It ran fine to begin with but i left the breather cap open a little over night and i believe I got water in the fuel and motor. She konked out then was all over. I emptied the external tank and flushed it out and started again.

I then think i may have accidently doubled the oil in the fuel mix with the new clean fuel. It started fine but was blowing smoke like a mad thing, down low on the shaft. I then dumped this fuel ( cost me a fortune that week ) and got the mix right. (50:1?)

She now starts fine but REVS like a maniac with the choke in the normal in position. If i pull the choke out to 1/2 way it calms down and revs bout normal and if i pull the choke out the remainder of the way it then stalls.

In the water, under load ( my dingy ) its not to big an issue except that it idiols/revs high. To slow down i must pull the choke out to lower the revs. It still seems to blow a bit of smoke but this may be just left over oil from before or this may be related to my current problem?

I am in the process of chasing down a manual so i may do my own services and maintance. Thanks for any assistance or advice.
:D

Patience, Section.

We are not crowded with Mariner experts.

It might help if you give us more info, like:

Your wild revving. Is it in the water? Under load?

What have you checked? Throttle linkage? Have you tried adjusting the idle stop to lower the idle speed?

Is the linkage to the stator plate functioning smoothly, or is it stuck at full advance?

When you have your Servicce Manual it will all probably become clear.

Good luck. :)

.. :D Thanks JB for the wise words. Was at work and a bit anxious.
Have removed the throtle end, and checked cable and such and all looked ok. I do also think it is a mechanical thing, such as cable or something sticking. Just the oil and smoke thing thru me off a bit. I plan to do some work on her in the next day or 2 so if anything else comes up i will let you know.
Thanks again

p.s...sailors delight...red sky in the morning....sailors warning ;)

Look in the carb throat and visualize the position of the throttle butterfly when you move the throttle. It should be all the way shut at idle position and all the way open at full speed. You'll need a manual to describe the correct linkage to the ignition advance. Something isn't closing all the way or is sticking open, either the throttle plate or ignition advance. Manual is a necessity, every engine is a little different. Check the tiller connection to the engine also.

Yeah...you rock...thanks for the tip...that sounds clear enough... :)

Growing up we always worked on our own cars, mostly old Holdens. You buy the manual and pull it apart, fix it up, then put it all back together...i figured outboard motors would be the same. :D

Now im gettin excited to get the tools out. Will let you know how it goes.
Cheers again.
