Greetings,

I'm new to this board and have never posted an image so sorry if I post incorrectly.

I have a Mariner 5hp air cooled outboard that runs beautifully. I'm not sure of the age/model etc.. as I don't have a manual for it. This is whats on the side.

Mariner 5
661 S 014071

However the main problem is I noticed a gasket at the back of the motor that seems to be seeping brown goo. Would you guys be able to tell me just what gasket I need and a few hints & tips on replacing it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

gas0lean

Re: Mariner 5hp gasket help

What a curious motor! Never saw one like that. It looks like it has a jug below the cylinder head. It looks like some black stuff at the base gasket. What's that appendage below the cylinder, an expansion chamber? I know it says Mariner but I wonder who made it.

'Goo' on the outside is OK for a 5 horse or even a V-6.

However, Fresh gas and oil outside the engine could be a problem.

I think you should just boogie on until it pukes.

Thanks for the replies, I've run out of time now and am flat out back at work so she'll just have to wait a few more months.

gas0lean

WillyBWright - that appendage is the exhaust manifold. You're not seeing the part where it attaches to an obvious spot on the cylinder.
Whole picture, click here.

Looks like a little exhaust leak there. Not much to worry about, but a couple new gaskets from your merc dealer are cheap and the fix should be easy if the bolts come free. The gasket should be 27-82942M for the exhaust housing side, and 27-80042M for the head side.

Your engine is a Yamaha built 1974 model, by the way.
