Re: Mariner 60HP - No Power!!

Take the cover off, and look. You should see that when you advance the throttle that the large throttle arm moves all the way till it bottoms on the stops, the timing advance linkage should move (note the sliding portion behind the carbs) and the throttle butterflies need to open up all the way.

If all that looks ok, you may have a fuel blockage. Check the lines all the way from the tank to the carbs, including the fuel filter if so equipped. You may have a blocked jet in the carb... when was the last time they were serviced?

Yet another source, and probably most likely is that you are not firing on all cylinders. The motor may idle ok, but has no balls. Check for a good strong spark on each plug. The spark should be consistent, and needs to jump a 3/8" gap.

Thanks,

I have checked the trottle set up and the fuel lines etc :) and there is no problem here. However the engine will rev up to full power when in neutral but wont when in gear. Could this be a cylinder problem and if so can it be fixed....??

Thanks again.

Check for spark. Sounds like a dropped cylinder.

Check compression.

And don't rev it past 1500rpm when in neutral. Any faster and you run the risk of throwing a rod thru the block or worse . :(

Pull the plugs from each cyl and compare what they look like.

I have been researching a similar problem and many times the issue is an ignition problem, specifically the switch box. You might test for fire.
