Mariner 90 wont start

Hi all, my first post and I am already on my knees begging for help.
I just bought a SeaNymph Striper with a 90 Mariner that will not spark.
The previous owner has hacked into the control cables and I am guessing
that it may be the neutral pos sw or the safty cut out sw which does not
exist anywhere anymore. I found some black wires out of the ignition switch
that were jumped in a manner too complicated to describe. The control lever
is for center console and wiring is not shown anywhere in the manual I have.
I am also wondering if temp guage needs to be wired in in order to start?
That also had wires just hanging. Thanks to anyone with suggestions. I did
notice that the red/orange wire going to the starter relay is grounded?
i believe this is the neutral saftey switch, shouldnt that be open?

You might post bac the year and num of cylinders on that motor. Most merc 90s built after 1978 have ADI ignition. In '79-eighties models the orange wire is grounded to kill the spark. Newer Merc 90s have a black/yellow wire to kill the spark.

Its an inline 6 1991, ser# begins with 592,
Is it possible to take this wire off to check, or is that not recomended?

oh I'm a long way from giving up, i have completely rewired every light, gauge
pump and switch, just saved the motor for last, i had enough used electrical
tape to blacktop the driveway, all previous connections were twisted and taped, once in a while a wirenut which isnt much better, they even used
red for both the pos and neg wires. My only fear now is that at this point
with walleye season opening in an hour and a half, even when i do get her fired up i have a feeling the fuel system will need plenty of attention as well.
it would have been a nice winter project, but with limited time and all the normal work associated with spring, i may be money ahead by having it looked at.

Re: Mariner 90 wont start

OK, You sound like a guy who knows his way around a motor. Lets hotwire it. Disconnect the boat harness at the main plug on the motor. Now you should have spark. Use a jumper wire (clip lead or something) to energize the starter solenoid, and the motor should start.

Now rig yourself a little wiring harness and go get those pike.

BTW the electric choke and overheat and oil injection warning systems will not work, but the motor will run.

Re: Mariner 90 wont start

i got it to fire today by undoing one of the phone splices he made up under there, pretty rough though, i dont think they ever put it away without three
bowls of fuel in there, i have done the carbs on my smaller engines before,
but never one with three all linked together, last year my 15 mariner started
right up when we went for early perch, but a handfull of sunflower seeds in
the carb put a quick end to that day, that didnt bring up my blood pressure too much.
