mariner 90hp serial number help

I recently bought a 90hp mariner outboard. I was told it was a 1990. The serial number on the plate reads OC2500071, but on the metal disk pressed into the motor it reads B2500071. Which is the correct serial number and why are the different? Is this a 1990 motor?<br />Thanks in advance!

Well........ it looks like you have a 1990 lower end and a 1988 powerhead by you numbers. The numbers should match. Merc started the matching no.s to help determin where came from theft,powerhead switching ect.
