1976. Often you need to put a zero in front of the S/N when searching by S/N. 452558 falls the the 1976 S/N range in the Maxrules chart for a 2 cylinder 40 HP.

^ An oopsie with that one my friend. When it comes to the Mariners from Japan that start with something like 6E9, those listing serial numbers are not found over on Max Rules. Max appears to be only covering the Mercury engine serial numbers. In this case titaniumneck only has six digits in the serial number. The listing from Max has seven digits and which was used before they went to using a letter in front of the number.

Plus now that I read Max's statement where it basically says older Mariners from Japan can't be crossed reference to a year with accuracy was at first surprising to me but not necessarily so true. There are other charts available online that get very close to or right on the money as I've seen both.... Plus sometimes there's one other "trick" at finding out what year these are and finding a parts catalog for that/these engine model(s) is possible too.

PLEASE NOTE: leading zeroes are not relevant, e.g. "0B123456" is the same as "B123456" in the listing.
However, later model serial will begin with a "1" or higher in pace of the "0"; those ARE significant .
US-made Mariner motors are identical with Mercury serial number ranges and use these same charts.
The serial number format is the same.
Japanese Mariner motors have a totally different serial number scheme, e.g. "6A3-S-123456"
We currently do not have those here, but are largely useless. These motors do not have any consistent year-to-serial scheme.

Mercury ceased publishing this information after the 1996 model year. There is no way to find the model year of motors with significantly higher
serial numbers than listed in these guides. There is NO serial-to-year cross-reference chart for 1997 and later motors.
Mercury has never really used model years for much of anything other than "sales tools" in dealerships.
We WILL need your serial number to look up correct parts.

With that highlighted titaniumneck, your serial number is sitting right between 1990 and 1991 in the charts since the next set of serial number ranges of your 452558 doesn't pass 1992 with nothing listed for 1991. http://www.autorepairmanuals.biz/page/608047

That mentioned, your model number 7040312SU has the engine to be a 1990 too. Here is your parts catalog through iboats, http://www.iboats.com/MARINER-40-HP-...iew_id.1696872
