1996 Mariner Magnum (oil injected), 150 hp. For the past few trips, would accelerate great when first taking off from the ramp, then if you let off the gas and hit it again, it would die. Start up and idle fine, then die when you hit the gas. If you let it sit or idle for a long period of time, it would take off fine, then if you slow down and take back off...it'll die.
I rebuilt the carbs.....really helped the idle and it starts easily now, but the problem is still there. When I took it out last night it did it again, so today I checked the compression, and it's even at 110 psi.
THEN I went and got a new fuel water separator filter and istalled it, and I think I found the problem. The filter was about 3/4 full of water...and rusty in the inside, like coming apart rusted. I changed the inline filter on the motor also, and it was not too bad, but had some of the rust particles in it too. Gas smells good going to motor now, and nice and clear....particle free. Motor starts VERY well now, and idles great.
Is it safe to assume that when I first start the motor, the gas and water is separated, and when I get running it mixes and causes those issues?
I will post pics of the contents of the filter...it'll blow your mind
