I found my serial # on my 1989 Mariner 150, called Mercury Marine and got lots of info on my motor. It was manuafactured in 1989 and it was made by Merc. So how close is it to a 1989 Mercury engine.

Thanks , Rick

Re: Mariner vs Mercury

It might be possible that because of their respective colors, Mariners may be less prone to vaprolocking. I've never heard of that being a factor, but I live up north where it gets that hot only on occasion. Anyone in the southern regions hear of any such problems with Mercs more than Mariners?

Also, in the 1980's. Mariners under 60Hp were Yamahas. Doesn't apply to yours.

Hey Wolfman,
I've been told by several Merc techs that the temp inside a Merc can get 20-50degrees hotter because of the black colored housing.

Dave

Ya, but is that temp difference with it just sitting there in the sun at the dock, or when actually running the thing?

It would seem to me that once it starts snorting all that air into it (not to mention cooling water) that the paint induced temp difference would be a lot less remarkable - no?

-W

I've never had a problem with vapor lock or heat with my Merc's and I grew up running them in the Central Valley of CA and it get's Very hot (100 +)there. the only hazard is when you grab onto the morot getting in or out of the boat. That black metal gets VERY HOT!!!

Craig

Re: Mariner vs Mercury

i have a 1979 70 hp merc and after initially having to replace the stator and trigger when i bought it 6 months ago i have not had any problems. The only problem i have is after about 30 seconds to 1 minute of idling it always stalls.
I have told by local mechanics that they are one of the worst motors for corrosion though
My compression is 145 on 1 and 3 but only 132 on #2. i guess this is ok compression?
