Well I did it again. I bought another boat. This weekend I bought a 1961 Dorsett Belmont in pretty darn good original condition. No rot anywhere!!! The guy threw in a Mark 75 missing the lower end with it.

I have two questions. Do you think the 60 hp "dockbuster" is too much for this boat? Not the thickest hull on this boat.

Anyone know where I can find a lower end and prop for the Mark75? Oh and it's missing the grill/or cowl front as well. Every thing else on the motor seems to be in pretty darn good shape.

Boat looks like it would be much happier with a Mercury Mark 55/58 or similar on it - appears to be about 14-foot. The 4-cylinder Mercs in the 40-50hp range give you a similar vintage look with lighter weight, easier service and a full gearshift. Use the Mark 75 as trade bait as someone will want it.

Thanks Chinewalker. That's pretty much what I am planning. 65hp is too much for this boat. I don't think I'll ever want to go 107 mph with this boat, Laff. I like the Smaller Mercs cuz their so light but i need a Neutral. No dockbuster for me. I was/am trying to find the lower end for the mark75 just to have more value as trade or sale. A buddy's friend has said he might have a Johnson 50 he'd let me have. I haven't seen it yet so I'm still looking.

If it's a period correct Johnson 50, then it's likely a Fat Fifty - heavy and thirsty. If it's a 1970s or newer 50, it's a much better motor...

The Johnson (s) will be mid to late 70's. I'm most interested in getting the boat in the water first. As time goes I will look for or build a period correct motor. I'm shocked at how heavy some people have loaded their little boats. The sale info I found on here states the boat is rated for 40-50hp. I've seen many with 65 and up. Those boats are gonna rip apart, I'd think. Anyway, I don't need that much power for such a tiny boat. 40-50 is fine for me.

1958 Mark75.

I bought a little Dorsett Belmont a couple weeks ago and it came with a '58 Mark75 with a power head that has been rebuilt but missing the lower end. This motor is way too much for the Dorsett and I'm trying to sell or trade it. It would be easier to sell or trade if I had the lower end for it. (The guy gave me a lower end unit that he said fit but it's actually a mark78 lower end. I'm gonna sell it too if I can.)

Anyone know where I can find a Mark75 lower end? Ed
