The Spirit is not doing what it is supposed to be doing for the past 24 hrs. It is not sending data. All they have gotten is a confirming beep that data transmitted from earth was received. They thought it might come back online after the normal powerdown at dusk and restart at dawn. Sounds like my computer. Did they forget the reset switch? Were they using the first edition of Windows 98?

Darn!!!

Now we dont get to find out that those rocks on mars are made out of rocks!!

These are just baby steps though.

It may seem like a waste of time & money now but you have to crawl before you can walk.

Does the rover seem like a waste of money??

Sure.

But the technology we are building on may take us places we never dreamed of.

That's why George W. is in New Mexico now. He's at Roswell to start the negotiations with the Martians to give it back.

This is just a little pessimistic humor Mattt ;) Personally, I am all for the Mars program. Even downloaded the big panaromic pic of the surface. It is fantastic what we are doing but I certainly can understand the point of view of those that think this is an 800 million dollar boondogle.
A loss of this robot could hurt the space exploration effort.

Re: Mars Spirit incommunicado

This just in.

The Mars Rover-Spirit has recently been "off line". The reason has
just been discovered. It seems that there was a previously undetected
"bug" in the rovers programming.

The bug shut the rovers communication down, with NASA, while the rover
made numerous forays and did experiments looking for oil and minerals.
It is believed that this bug was planted by Haliburton in an attempt to
get first rights to any raw materials that Mars may hold. The rover
resumed communications with NASA, at JPL, once the secret download to
Haliburton was completed. It is uncertain as to extent that Pres.
George W. Bush or VP **** Cheney were involved.
