I just bought a Martin 60 for 80 bucks.
The motor runs fine.
The decals are worn and I cannot read what the controls are. I figued out that the left one is carb prime and the right one is a gas shutoff, however the middle just has what looks like a primer screw that goes into a bolt. Am I supposed to adjust this?

Lastly, on top of the gas tank cap there is a screw that I guess lets air in and out? Do I mess with this?

Thanks,
Tracy

Re: Martin 60

Hi Tracy: Peter Hunn's Old Outboard Book devotes 4 pages to Martin engines and is worth a look if you just got one. I've never seen one and so I can't tell you much except what's in Hunn's book. Model 60 is rated at 7.2hp and was the most common of the Martin series. There is a picture of a swivel mount that allows the motor to swing around with the L.U. pointing into the boat. The screw on the gas cap is probably a vent screw; open it a couple turns when running and close when not in use. Company went out of business in early 60's. I guess they were pretty cool engines in their day. Go to the Antique Outboard Motor Club website at aomci.org and you should be able to find out more about it - where to get parts, service info, etc. Good luck!

Re: Martin 60

I have owned many of these motors. Although the vent screw on the gas cap should be open when you are running these motors, often the gas cap rubber does not seal tight on the tank. If the motor runs good without opening it, let it. The adjustment needle on the middle of the carb is to adjust the idle mixture-lean or rich. All of the motors I had like this tended to spit or cough through the carb at idle if this was not set rich enough. Turning the needle counterclockwise richens the mixture.
