Has anyone had their boat inspected in Mass? I don't have a 12 digit HID so they want to inspect. I was just wondering what they look for and what the experience is like.

Thanks in advance,

-Mark

Re: Mass. Inspection

I suppose it depends on the boat being inspected. A 14' alum utility is going to get inspected pretty quickly. They will see if it is in one piece, check for any identifying marks, and evidence of a "ground off" HIN, indicating foul play. I'm sure the inspection for a 24' CC would be a bit more extensive, but what it would include I don't know.

I have heard that some states will engrave a number in the boat for future identification.

I hope someone can provide us with the details.

MA resident here...they'll check for evidence of original HID, tampering, and replacement, etc. Also, if everything checks out, they'll make certain an ID for the future is in place if the boat is over a certain size. For larger craft, an HID will be assigned and need to be secured to the hull.
