material for shear pin...

Please can some one tell me what material should be used on the propeller for a shear pin for a Evinrude 9.5 (9222m) The diameter of the rod is 3/16" (0,187") Would stainless(316) be to strong? Thank you for yours comments! Ronald.

The factory drive pin was Stainless Steel. What kind I don't know

I always liked to cut my shear pins out of brass welding rod. That way I never damaged any internal parts.
