i had another thread going but the title was very vague so some guys suggested that i start a new one so that maybe i could get the attention of people who have done what i am trying to attempt or people that could help me out with suggestions and no-no's..
i have a 1972 IMP not sure of which model .. has a cuddy cabin, is a stern drive..i recently puchased it because it was failry cheap but has no engine ...i purchased a 1985 mercruiser that was supposed to be running perfect but ended up having a blown head gasket ..so i got to do my first head gasket job ...it was pretty simple... engine is great now but it is not going to mount in my boat like it was mounted in the other boat..i beleive i am going to have to build up some type of blocks in the engine bay and fiberglass it to the boat. there is a part on the boat i took the engine out of that has a sticker on it that says MARINE j1171..i beleive it is the trim pump ...do i need this on my boat or not ? i think the guy has already sold it to someone else ...also how can i hotwire the tilt motor ?? to see if it works and to get the outdrive up so that i can pull the boat around without havin to wrry about the outdrive hitting the ground? i know this is alot of questions but i have many more lol this is my first boat and i want to do as close to perfect as i can and everyone on here seems to know what they are talking about..thanks

Ayuh,.... 2 No-No's jump out at Me,....

The 1st is the basic Idea of puttin' a Merc dressed motor in a hull set up for a Stringer Drive...
You're lackin' All the dressings you Need,+ the 1s you have are Useless to ya...
Your headed for a Million Dollar Frankendrive boat....

The other is,... The lack of basic paragraphs makes readin your posts cause my old eyes to Bleed....
Waste some bandwidth, 'n use the enter key at the end of individual thoughts....

Thank you...

was the original set up with the OMC drive a V8?
if it was you will need the shaft coupler and the front mounts from the OMC.
also you will still need the OMC intermediate housing assy.
if the 85 260 uses the two piece main seal you can use the OMC coupler, if not your out of luck mostly.

i dont know what was in the boat originally ..i got myself into this mess because the boat was so cheap ...i am guessing that there was a v8 because the plate on the boat says it is rated for 245 hp..

i know that the motor mounts arent the same so i am going to lower the engine down in there and get it where it is going to sit so that i can see where ill have to build blocks for the motor mounts.

also the exhaust is totally different so i am going to go with thru the hull exhaust.

Way out of my league, but...

I think you'd need to find where your outdrive would go first and that will then dictate where your motor will go.

Have you considered the other options that I had posted on your other thread? I can't help but think you are headed into way more time and way more money by sticking with your current route???

well it would be awesome if i could sale the boat and engine that i have now and get something that had engine problems or something ... but i wouldnt get enough money out of the boat and engine to do that... i have all winter now to do this project so i am gonna try it ...

i have kept all of the recepits and such to keep up with how much i have put into it already and if i am successful with this maybe i could help someone else out on here ...

as far as the money part goes i havent had to by anything except for a battery so far and all that ill need to get goin on it is a treated 2x4 for the engine mounts

well i will keep evryone updated on the project. i am open to any suggestions, ideas, and information about anything.

thanks guys
