I have a 1978 19 ft. galaxy bowrider, and I'm trying to find out what the max. size outboard is that can go on it. Where can I find manufacturer's info? Right now it has an 85 hp evinrude outboard, but I'm thinking about getting a larger engine.

I too have a 19 foot 1978 Galaxy bowrider that I bought new way back when. I believe my boat is the model BR1000. Although mine is an I/O with 170 horses I would expect you can do a whole lot better than 85 HP assuming your transom is in good shape with no rot.<br />My 170 HP moves the boat pretty well. Galaxy boats went out of business in the 90's.

Do you think the 85's too slow? I had a 19' GradyWhite with an 88 that could lift two skiers, go 39 mph, etc. If you're unhappy with the speed, the motor may be sick or you may have too much prop (17" should work great). 1973-1985 OMC V4s from 85 to 140 hp are the same size motor (99 cubic inch - OK some of the early 85hps are 92inches). On the higher-hp motors, you're basically getting a little more top end, and giving up a some grunt in the mid-range. So, on the bigger boats, the 85-90hps can actually be a better match, particularly if you're pulling skiers. BTW, I'm up by Bradley Field, if you want to unload that 85, give me a shout.
