Is there a generic formula for figuring the max hp for pontoons? I have been looking at toons for a couple of weeks and most that I see seem to be realy underpowered. Ex. 28' w/ 40 0r 50 hp, or 20' w/30hp. I would think that a formula that takes log diameter and length plus weight of deck
would give a close guess. I have not seen any capacity plates on any of these toons.

Re: Max HP formula

uscg max hp formula is as follows:
length x 2 x width - 90 = max hp

example 17 feet long by 6.25 feet wide would be...
17 x 2 = 34
34 x 6.25 = 212.5
212.5 - 90 = 122.5

round up to the nearest "5" in hp, so round up to 125

but also keep in mind weight of boat, conditions boat is use id and allowable weight of motor plus gear.

if your allowed 1000 pounds of motor and gear and you always carry 800 pounds of gear, dont get a 400 pound motor. commo sense
