I have a 78-79 wellcaft airslot 165. The 1995 40 HP I have on the boat right now runs fine but of course I want something bigger.

I found by searching forums that the max HP for the 1978 165 airslot is 120HP for an OB.

I have been looking at mostly 70-90HP OBs but I have seen some 110s too.

My question is that with the hull being 30 years old am I running a risk putting the larger motor on?

The transom is in great condition, hull was redone by previous owner few years ago.

I am planning on getting a 2 stroke to help on the weight. But I want to get power tilt and trim in case that affects the weight that much.

thanks

Just a suggestion. Go sit on your current outboard while in the water. Your transom as you stated sounds okay.... but the added weight would be a concern.

As long as your boat is "sound" and the transom was re-built properly you should be okay.

as Bob said, the weight is the question. the 4 cylinders 90,110,112,115 all are around 305 lbs, the 70 is 237lbs, the 40 is 185lbs. put your boat in the water then add the addition weight to the stern, and see where the water line is. besure to get the proper length shaft for your boat or you are screwed.
