Hi,

I'm new to boating and don't have a boat yet. I'm in the researching phase. What is the longest boat that can be tow on a trailer (legally). I lived in California. Thanks!

vn911

Re: Max Towable Length

Sometimes it's not the length but the width of the load which is exceeded on the road. For example here in TX, the maximum load width is 8'6" (and max length of truck+boat is 65') and anything over that requires special permit, registration (MCD with DOT) and of course high fees.

This is the link to the TX site. I tried searching for a CA site but didn't find anything. Maybe you'll have better luck.

Have fun with your new boat!
Lou

BBL is right on the money. Length is right and 8'6" is the magic number for width. Same # for RV width too.
However you can go wider but you need permits and those are never cheap. Plus "wide load" signs, lights and or flags etc., but I am sure those change state by state and I am sure there is a weight per axle limit as well.

The max. permit width in Canada is much bigger than my charge card so I am guessing it is around 10 feet.

I do not know the length but the width is 8' 6" or 102 inches in California. After that lot of restrictions
