Maximum Capacity?

I recently purchased a used boat, Most of the information is illegible. I attempted to contact the OEM but phone is no longer in service, and no response from my emails.
I would like to know exactly what model I have, and the maximum number of persons, gear, HP, etc.
1988 VIP HIN VVN9V556B888 (registration list it as 19' 6")
what I can make out of the model number is (x = illegible) 19x0 xx
The vessel is powered by a 4.3l OMC Cobra I/O
I attempted researching on my own, But NADA nor iboats listings were very comforting.
Thank you,
Benjamin

Re: Maximum Capacity?

My best guess would be 7, possibly 8.
Look at for newer boats that style/size and see what they have for capacity.

Who is the manufacturer?

Re: Maximum Capacity?

My guess would be Model 1950 SS Victory listed as 18' 8" for 1988. Nice looking boat

Just curious, Why would you go with the SS victory as opposed to the non SS victory?
Is their a big difference between the two?
Thank you, the picture really does not do it justice, however it does need some love'n.
(weak spots in floor, front freeze plugs pushed nearly all the way out.)
But I really wanted it so I would have plenty of reasons to post here on iboats...

Re: Maximum Capacity?

If the engine's front casting plugs are pushed out at all I would be very careful when starting it. There is a reasonable possibility of the block being cracked if there was enough force put on the plugs to push them. Perhaps you test drove it and it's fine, but if not check the oil several times for any milky appearance when you first fire it up and when running.
Good looking boat

You stated in your 1st post the model was (x = illegible) 19x0 xx the 1950SS fills in the blanks Measure your boat length and beam and it will give you a better idea based on info available on the web

Re: Maximum Capacity?

I traded a 90 Astro quickfire 16 F/S with a 90 Mercury, all in great condition for it. The previous owner sold this boat as a cracked block, but my family had simply outgrown the small boat, and we never used it for fishing, just pleasure. As far as the repairs to the boat and engine I am going to save that for their respective topics, elsewhere in the forum, but I do appreciate the reply's.

Re: Maximum Capacity?

Thank you for the reply's.
Another question, If (and when) I get stopped by a DNR state ranger, and say I have 7 people, without a legible coastguard information plate, how would he base his decision on me being within the occupant limit of my boat?
Thanks,
Benjamin
Boat will be used on Georgia water's.

Be smart and you'll be fine. Push the limit and you're pushing your luck.

Re: Maximum Capacity?

I can tell you DNR (at least in Illinois) will check your capacity rating and everything else. My boat does not have a capacity plate and was built as (Owner Responsible or "OR"). Some states recognize that designation, others do not. If they don't, they will have a formula based on length, width, and transom height X "some factor" to determine capacity. One outing last year, I had 11 (5 adults, 6 small kids) in my boat and the DNR was checking people pulling out. The agent couldn't find the formula to use but I did the next day. Turns out I can legally carry 12 passengers in my boat per the Illinois formula.

Re: Maximum Capacity?

Nice post.

Bobbabob -
Our current boat, a 22' cuddy in my signature, has a rating for 5 peeps or 1,500# (I think the weight is right). No issues within these limits.
I have never seen ratings per person that high before, usually divides out to 150# per. But it should be higher.

Our previous bow rider was 16', limits of 5 peeps or 1,000 -- let me tell you, 4 peeps were cramped and at she barely stayed afloat at 900 pounds.

Funny, I know that sinking feeling. My Fisn N Ski is rated at 7 / 1100#, never done 7, 2 adults and 2 tweeners is enough.
