I have a 1973 14'6" Fabuglas. I was wondering what the maximum motor size this boat can handle without damaging the transom. Also, is there any way to strengthen the transom?

Re: maximum engine weight question

Just a guess, but 50 HP does'nt sound out of line. I'm assuming you cannot find the "load & Max HP" sticker. I had a 1967 15' Wellcraft Semi-Deep V, with a 65 merc on the back, which was original. You might look around at some of the classifieds on the net and see if you can find a boat like yours and see what they are running. Maybe others will a have better idea on the HP! Good Luck,(Also as far as the transom, do a search at the top of this page on "Transom Repair")

Re: maximum engine weight question

the us coast guard web site has a formula for calculating max hp based on hull length and transom width. 50hp sounds right but check your transom carefully for rot. Also, too much hp is not just a function of weight and transom strenght -- if you overdo it your boat will not handle properly and you can get into insurance problems.
