Maxum boat any good? Help Please!!!

Quick question,

I am about to buy a 1990 16 foot Maxum boat with trailer (really rusted) and a 1996 Evinrude 70 hp outboard. He is asking for $2250. Is this a deal?

Here is the thing, the hull of the boat looks really shinny and clean but for a 18 years boat, i dont know if it should look that nice. The floor is solid. The rest of the boat is pretty beat up. Especially the up side of the boat, the color is faded and the seat are cracked. Also how could i tell if the outboard is really 1996?

Whats up with the nice hull and is it worth $2250?

get the model # of the motor and post it. if it is solid, and running well decent price. trailer can be cleaned up or replaced. is it in saltwater environment? get atleast 1 hour test drive.

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.

A 30 year old boat motor combo, may be in better condition, than a 3 year old

If the motor has been well taken care of, then it's good deal. Maxum is an entry level boat, but still decent.
