Maxum transom drain

This past fall I bought a 92 Maxum 1800 XR, the hull, floor and transom are solid and look like new but the drain bothers me. It's just a hole through the transom with a brass plate with a 1/2 inch NPT plug. Other boats I've owned had a thimble or something in the hole. Is this normal?

Thanks Bill

My maxum was the same design and poorly sealed. from your picture the wood looks to be saturated. You need to get that dried up asap and then reseal it better.

My 1990 Maxum 1800 has the same thing, I just use some Teflon tape on the plug and tighten snug. Haven't had a problem with leaks.:D

yea but you need to seal off the transom wood or else your going to have problems down the road. what i did was cut a short piece of pvc pipe and glue it into the hole. that way water will still drain out, and your transom wood is protected

Thanks for the replies. I was also thinking of either a tube or filling the hole with epoxy and redrilling it. The hole does have some type of coating on it because I probed it and it's hard, I also stuffed a paper towel and it's dry. It just seemed odd that they would encapsulate the stringers and wood to prevent rot and leave the one spot that is suppose to get wet like they do.

have you inspected your stringers? looks can be deceiving. mine looked to be in good condition from the side and still encapsulated, but i cut out a small piece of fiberglass and found saturated wood inside. water gets into the stringer and cant get out...
