I've just been poking around on my Johnson 90hp 60 degree v4 1999

and at the base of the air box down between the 2 lower carbies I've found 2 grey wires with a white stripe, one has a male connection the other female

can anyone tell me what they are for?? should they be connected to anything, or connected together or are that for an option i don't have??

thanks

My wiring diaghram for that motor does not show grey/white wires, sorry. You might trace them back and see where they lead.

Around here, no response means nobody has a clue. No answer is better than a wrong answer.

Another idea to get more responses is to post some pictures of your problem. That helps a lot of times... JMHO!

yep tacho works, everything seems to work.

I've been chasing a hard to cold start issue, however today i have cut off the cable ties the mechanic used to attach the primer bulb and have fitted screw type hose clamps, suddenly when priming the bulb it now does get hard so hopefully that may have been a problem, even running maybe it was sucking some air.

however while checking out the primer/choke solenoid i discovered these two wires, and hoped i had not knocked them off from somewhere..

Earlier when mucking around i knocked off a breather, a small hose running from high up between the two top carbies that runs to the air box.

so I've set a pattern

im stressing as i have not had an outboard for a very long time and am concerned about the whole thing.

like leaning out cylinders and all sorts of stuff, probably doing to much reading and not enough out on the water

i had intended to take it out today but my daughter decided to have a baby, darn kids so thoughtless, hahahah

guess I'm going to have to go now and do the pop thing for a while

Only wires I found with a white stripe on it was a blue and a green wire which is trim up and down and they do have a male and female connection . Sometimes these wires fade and it's hard to recognize original color but if your motor trims up and down ,it's not one of these .JMT

ok so its been a couple of days, and every time i check the primer bulb it only takes a couple of squeezes to get hard ( don't even go there)

whereas previously you could squeeze for ever and it never really got hard.

i think I've been lucky, could easily have been sucking air, and from researching, that could have been catastrophic.

stupid professional mechanics, you put your self in there hands assuming they know, and thats what happens, cable ties instead of hose clamps, yep it sure did look pretty on the transom though

and i guess from the mechanics point of view, i would never know why the motor blew up.

and he would have gladly pocketed my money.

just as well its been winter here and i haven't used it much

early next week i get the chance to give it a run, heres hoping all is good.

just posted the above and thought hell i should try it ( i try not to start it to often out of respect for the neighbours, noise and smoke)

anyway primed the bulb, hit the key, pressed the key in and bang it started right up, whereas previously i would crank and crank it, eventually spraying some wd40 into a cylinder to get it to start.

i think whats happened is that the cable ties when first put on sealed it but as the hose relaxed/softened/or took a set then the cable tie was no longer tight enough,

what made me wonder is that i had just started to notice a fuel/oil mess starting to appear on the swim stet part of the transom.

fingers crossed

wooo hoooo took the boat out today and it went well screamed eeeeehahh

ok ill calm down now, only thing I'm doubtful of is that at 6 knots through the marina it seemed grumpy like it was occasionally missing on a cylinder,

but as soon as i got out to the open bay and accelerated it just took off, I'm so happy, i have to adjust the trim limiter, because when i nail it the steering loads up so badly i can barely control it.

ran into a mechanic when we got back and he recommended adjusting the trim down position limiter shaft to a higher position he also said r/e the rough idle at no wake speed that i should trim it up a bit and see how that goes (????) ill give it a go , he said that trimming it up a bit would lean it out a bit and could help, he seemed to indicate that the rough idle was due to the cylinders loading up. the no wake zone i have to run trough takes a good 10 minutes so i don't know maybe??

oh and heaps less smoke

as I've said before i know very little about outboards and especially 2 strokes, I've always considered them a black art

most of my boating life its been EFI sterndrives with power steering.

but I'm willing to learn, so all helpfully comments are greatly appreciated

thanks for reading
