Hello all,
I have a 2000 mazda 626 sitting in my yard with a perfect v6 2.5l engine, I also have a 1950 bayliner capri cuddy which need an engine. I was wondering if it is possible to put the mazda engine in the bayliner?

Sure. Just bolt it right in.

Is your "1950 Bayliner Capri Cuddy" an inboard?

(Was Bayliner even in business in 1950?)

There is no stern drive components that bolt to any Mazda engine so you will have to fabricate everything. Unless you have your own personal machine shop (my neighbor does) AND "all the time in the world", AND a LOT of money, you're much better off using an engine and drive components that are available.

And what's available (now).... is Mercruiser, OMC, and Volvo Penta "stuff" that has been mostly used with GM marine engines and previously, (like more than 10 years ago) FORD engines)

So your best bet will be to sell the Mazda and find a GM 4.3L truck engine (or rebuild what you have if it's a v-6)

I'm guessing 1950 is the model name, not the year.
The OP is new to the forum; give him a break instead of sarcasm.

The short answer is that it's nearly impossible to use the Mazda engine without all the custom engineering and expensive fabrication mentioned above. By far, the best option is to rebuild the existing engine or replace it with something similar.

1950 is the model as in 19.5'. Bayliner has been using 4-digit model numbers for years (until recently).

Not only will the Mazda engine not bolt up, nothing on it will be marine safe and coast guard approved. It will be an extremely dangerous engine to run and likely to blow you & your boat up since it has not spark or fuel containment like a proper marine motor. I'd also be concerned with wether it could handle the load a marine engine must constantly endure.

As a side note, I wonder how a rotary engine would react in a marine environment? Just thinking out loud...

The 2.5l is a v6 (as he stated). Was also used in ford prob, Mazda mx6.

Sell the car, take the money and buy something that will bolt up. Better yet sell the car and boat and buy something that already works!

Yeah. Those people are just down the road from me....

That engine is driving a V-drive I think. They don't offer a flywheel cover that will bolt to a Mercruiser transom mount.

It wouldn't be practical in front of a stern drive probably because the engine must turn VERY high RPM to make HP. It would better suited to a jet or V-drive (although I think they have an upper limit too)

Re: Mazda engine??

The good old KL 2.5 was a great engine, that was nearly indestructible, and with 170hp and a 7000 RPM red line was fun to drive.... In a car.

Even if you were to some how solve all the issues of adapting, cooling, and ignition protection, you are dealing with a short stroke screamer that really doesn't wake up till about 3000 RPM, and would want an outdrive with a gear set steeper than what exists.

Sell the engine to whom ever needs it for their 626/Probe/MX-6/Millenia, and use the cash to buy the correct engine for your boat.
