I have a 1977 470 mc1 and the drive oil is leaking from a passage above the seal carrier for the prop seals. There is a passage (maybe the exhaust exits from) which gear oil is running down from and making he carrier appear that it’s leaking. I would like to know where the oil is coming from before I take the drive apart. Thanks.

There's a big o ring that should be sealing the front end of the bearing carrier. .. Sounds like that's leaking

I’ve been fighting that oring that you are describing it is not leaking. There is a passageway above the carrier that is running oil down from above. It’s hard to take a picture of.

more likely a bad seal in the water pump base or the upper driveshaft seals

I took the drive apart and gear oil was running out between the gaskets on the water pump so I am gonna assume the water pump housing seal. The seal doesn't look bad and I have replaced it in the past. Can the shaft have to much play and wobble and let the seal leak?
