I pulled the seal retainer to install prop seals and now gear oil runs out of the prop. Do I need to add sealant where the retainer touches the gear housing? Thanks. 1977 470

Did you clean the surface where the large “O” ring seals to the case and used a new one ?

You really should use sealant on the outer of seals and “O” rings. The factory does it.

I did not put sealant on the oring but I did on both surfaces that touch the gear case housing. Gear oil ran out really fast the first time that’s why I took it apart again and decided to apply sealant. Maybe i did not tighten the nut enough to compress the oring.
