Even though they are out of business, Is it still possible to get an axle for a Caulkins trailer OR do I need to have one custom made?
I just inherited a nice Caulkins double axle, galvanized, over 5,000 lb trailer. Frame is excellent. Front axle is good, rear axle is shot--was replaced with angle iron (go figure). Rollers are all in excellent shape. Lights appear new. Tires? Ehh. but what do you expect on a free trailer? They would have needed to be replaced for wear sooner or later anyway. Coil springs? Ehhh--but still useable.
Considering the price and capacity, to me it's worth repairing. --nice piece of 2" square, heavy wall tubing and a couple of spindles. later on brakes.
Never did dual axle before. Does it need brakes on both axles or just one? Obviously both are better but is there a law? Could I start out with one axle and later add on the second set of brakes? I wasn't born rich, you know.
