I know this says no engine questions but this is more moter size. I have a 98 mckee craft scoundrel with a 55hp max on it. I have been reading a whole lot and most guys are running 90 hp and some even bigger. I have a 82 johnson 75hp formula e racing moter i want to put on it. It should be fine they have great transoms. But wanted to know if anyone thinks this is not good or a bad idea. I am not looking to gun it or kill myself just got a great deal on the moter. Anyone have any expwith this?

welcome aboard. However you will not find anyone on the forum that can recommend running more than rated HP. generally its a bad idea.

That motor weighs 198 pounds, is rated at 75hp at the crank, and puts out maybe around 55 at the prop when it was new. (very likely even less now) A modern 50hp Merc 4 stroke puts out 50hp at the prop, and is 247 pounds. In other words, your more modern boat is rated for 55HP at the prop, and your 75hp crank rated motor is going to be very close or possible even under the rating.

Although most of iboats will argue all day long that the 75hp is a horrible idea, the facts show that the modern motor is probably a worse (and less safe) idea.

Thx i agree being that its a older moter the weight is less and a racing moter also makes it a little more my 25 Suzuki weight was around 125ish. And it being older will make it a little slower i think also. But thx for the honest answer
