MCM 165/3.7L/470 idling issues

As some of you know, I bought this boat a couple of years ago and rebuilt the engine and outdrive. I'm at the point to where I'm giving attention to more minor things like voltmeter not working (needed some super glue on magnet that kept slipping off shaft), lights not working (broken wire), etc.

One little nuisance that I'd like to fix is that the engine idle speed tends to vary a lot. Typically, I'll tweak the idle speed in the driveway and be happy with that, but then when I'm out on the water idling, I'll often have to raise the doghouse lid and adjust the idle speed up a little to keep it from stalling. Then that causes a problem with a hit or two of dieseling when I kill the motor. If I idle it back down to avoid any dieseling, I'll often have to idle it up using the control stick.

Here's how it idles in the driveway. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfyUfUl8mF4&feature=related

Some facts about the boat. Engine is completely rebuilt, has a rebuilt Mercarb 2 BBL (buh-barrel), Pertronix Ignitor/Flame Thrower installed. Timing is steady at 4 BTDC.

I haven't opened the plug gap to .040 yet. Could probably use a new set of plug wires.

Idle mixture? Play in throttle linkage? Any other culprits?

Could be a little trash in the carb or a worn idle set screw backing off under vibration. Try a little teflon thread tape on the screw and see if that helps.

Try adjusting the idle mixture, not speed, and do it in water.

Just out of curiosity, what's difference between sitting on a trailer and sitting on the water? Something to do with back pressure?

Back pressure does change. 4 cylinder engines are a bit touchier in the mixture adjustment than 6 & 8 cylinder engines.
