MCM 470 carb/manifold/cam conversion

A marine mechanic suggested upgrading my MCM 470's ('80-'82 version SN 5746179) 2BBL to a 4 BBL carb and new cam. I probably would need to find a MCM 488, 180, or 190 to get all the parts without spending a mint. The guy says it would yield another 30 HP. Who knows. Anyway, I push a pretty heavy old boat ('62 Dorsett San Juan Cuddy) with the motor and any additional power would be .... helpful.

Has anyone done or heard of this conversion?

I'd appreciate all opinions on the wisdom or lack of same in considering this option. Or, if you have first hand knowledge any tips, tricks, etc could come in handy. Also, if you know of any boneyard where the old 488s, 180 or 190s go, contact info would be a big help.

Thanks to all,
fishlipsjoe

All you need is the Carb, Manifolds,+ linkages.......
The Cam is the Same..........
And, Ayah, about 30hp, After you get it All Dialed In...............

BTW,
Welcome to the iboats.com forums.......... :)

Actually when you consider the power to weight ratio the 4 barrel is a significant improvement.

Look at some of the older V-8's that were not pushing that much more power.

I considered the conversion on my 470 but for the type of cruising I do a prop change was the cheapest performance gain.

The most exspensive drawback is finding a manifold and carb at a reasonable price.

Bob

Don't know how much truth is in it and I've never done it myself, but I have been told that if you put the Ford 'Dove II' alloy head on the 470 block you can get 250hp out of them.

Chris..........
