I have a dwell meter (very old one), but it only measures 4, 6 and 8 cyls.

For 4 cylinders, it says to double the 8 cyl dwell reading.

Would this work for a 3 cyl, to double the 6 cyl readings.?

Is there another way?

Yup.

Dwell is a measure of on vs off time based on the total number of degrees devoted to one cylinder. Thus a v8 4 cycle engine has 90 degrees per cylinder. 50% on (normal points) would be 45 degrees. 6 cylinder is 120/60. 3 would be 240/120 8 cylinder 2 cycle would be 45/22.5
