what is the proper way to measure shaft length on an outboard, from the transom bracket down to the center of the prop or ?????

It is amazing that even iBoats doesn't know the proper term is "Antiventilation Plate"

Down to the Anti-Ventilation plate which is there to prevent cavitation.

on that note, what is the function of that plate, and, will mounting an aux, device like an electric trolling motor effect its performance???

Gerry, The anti-ventilation plate prevents ventilation of course. Ventilation is when air is drawn into the prop, causing it to spin faster and lose "bite" in the water. Cavitation is something else. You might look up it's definition.

Ralph, where do you want to mount the trolling motor? The A-V plate should run on the surface or slightly above water surface, when boat is on plane.

the motor mounted trolling motor by Minkota mounts on top of that plate, which is normally well submerged at trollong speeds

Anything on or forward of the motor that affects the flow of water to the prop Can cause cavitation...er, ventilation whichever pulls your chain. It's all the same thing, air or void around the prop.

EDIT: I guess OMC doesn't know the difference either. But then, Ole Evinrude didn't know it is an outboard engine, not an outboard motor. So, what is tomorrow's topic for arguement?
