I am going to poke around more with it tomorrow, but I took my malory YL series flatcap distributor apart and cleaned all the springs and weights and such. Everything nice and clean and moves, till I place the plate back on it and the wieghts seem to be bound in the channels that allow them to swing out.

Figured I would ask if anyone has a suggestion with what might be happening here. It used to advance fine.

not familiar with your distrib but are the shaft bushings worn out. That would certainly cause all of the centrifugal parts to bind up.

if the shaft bushings are those little plastic sleeves the wieght pivot points slide over, they appear to be in fine condition.

Mahoney, the weights will not move by trying to turn the shaft, to ck them take 2 small screwdivers and try to move the weights--Bob

Re: Mechanical advance not functioning-found solution

Fixed it. Just in case this ever happens to anyone else. When cleaning my distributor I guess I had taken out the holder under the mechanical advance plate(the one the weights attach to and switched it 180 degrees. Since only one of these wieght is actually the one that initiates the force to act on the advance, and the other one is usually just lokked out. I had effectively looked out my advance.

I adjusted the advance arm so that weight could swing freely and ta-da, advancing like a charm. I am guessing I am going to see some very big horse and fuel economy improvements cruising and wide open seeing that before it was not advancing and I was still able to turn 4000 rpm, but only get about 35mph.
