An automotive fuel pump will leak gas into the bilge in great amounts if the diaphram gets a hole in it, in a boat, the gas goes to the carb.
In automotive, that leaking gas would be on the ground with fresh air around it, in your boat, if leaves all the gas and fumes and sparks from non marine parts a way of causing explosions and fires.
