The sending unit on my center console is bad and I am in need if a new one. The tank is under my console and I could very easily look down and see the gauge on one of the mechanical ones but I could also just hook an electric one up to the existing gauge. Which one is the better choice?

Ayuh,.... Either would be just fine,...

A mechanical don't need power, if you see that as a plus, Go for it,...

I would think replacing the sender so that the original gauge worked would be what I would do... Having an inop fuel gauge on the console would bother me, even if I had a working tank mounted mechanical gauge right under me. The better choice though is doing what you want to do; both end with you being able to monitor your fuel level.

For me, an inaccurate fuel gauge is almost worse than no gauge at all. We've probably all had vehicles where the first 100 miles still showed full and when it got to 1/4, find a gas station. I guess my recommendation would be to replace it with what ever seems the most accurate.

I am thinking I will just go back electric so I will have a gauge on the dash that is easier to look at while running down the lake or waterway

The "glass" in "visual" fuel gauges are notorious for clouding over the time.
