I have a question i have a merc 165hp inline 6 the old 250cid and stern was told that it is the alpha 1 gen 1 will this motor work in other boats that are merc stern and engine? and does it have to be a inline 6 that was in the new boat?? or can it be an old blown 4cyl? i have a line up on an 1981 Invader that had iether an 4 or inline 6?? please let me know, i have given up on fixing my old boats transom and think this might be alot easier since the stern is already off..

All varities of the Alpha will fit your bell housing up to about 1990. Anything inside depends on the engine bed (length)! I'm not all that sure you get away from rotten wood with a 30 year old Invader. Check the front motor mount area for enough length. The 165hp was atleast a foot longer.

Chief
i just got the new project boat its an 81 arrowglass tri-hull it had a 4 cycl in it that he pulled do to when he got it 3yrs ago it wasnt winterized and cracked the block he did say when the bilge pump would kick on maybe every 2 hours or so and thats when he found the crack in the block. well he sold the block and left the stern drive and rear mount on the boat. I called my local marina and talked to one of there mech and he said that the part numbers for the rear engine mount of the 4 and 6 cycl was the same does that sound about right? and also can i use the stern her left he showed me where after he found the crack in the block he went and had the stern completly serviced on the bill it says tear down and replace all gaskets and adjust forward and rear backlash. i don't know if i can use his thats still on the boat or use mine that was with my inline6? tell me what you think and also should i replace the bellows before putting the engine in the boat.?

P.S you was right on the length of the inline 6 it is 1 foot 2 inchs longer. so just need to cut out the old mount and put in a new 4x4 and glass it with water run holes... but any ideas on how to maybe get the right higth for the new engine stringer? i thought about getting a messurement from an old 4cycl mount and then messure mine to see the diffrence in higth need help on that part please. and also if wanted i can try and post pictures of progress..

Your little add on there deserves Jimmy Buffet! I love it.
Your going need a front motor mount, spacer & hardware. Put that on the 6cyl., set the engine in place. Bolt the rear mounts tight. With an alignment tool, get the engine where it's comfortable. From there make all the measurements & marks you need. Don't let the 4X4 or whatever you use, sit directly on the bottom. Keep it up & off about an inch and a half.

They probably will move this thread, so I'll watch for a reply! Or PM me
