I have a Mercury 90 elpt 4 stroke outboard with approximately 770 hours on the engine (about 95% of which are idling, trolling hours). I have maintained this engine per manufacturer's specs and the engine is EXTREMELY clean. The engine runs GREAT. I have been told everything from "it will need a complete rebuild at 1,000 hours" to "it will never need a rebuild if I maintain it the way I have". If it is well maintained and cared for, what is the expected life of this engine!! I need help!! Thank You.

In the automotive world, the industry standard is one hour equals 33 miles.

Applying that rule, your engine has the equivelant of 25410 miles. I think it's going to go a lot farther than that.

3000 hours is not unusual on inboard four stroke engines.

Lack of maintenance kills most marine engines.

If you have the same design problems with Merc / Yama power heads on 4 strokes your life will be greatly reduced. Do you have water mixing with your crankcase oil yet?

I talked with a gentleman the other day that had 1800 hour on his hour meter. It was a 115 four stroke Mercury. The guy uses it for chartering everyday. The only things he ever dose to the unit is the regular maintenance. No worries just good times on the water!!
