I have got an 85 or 86 Mecury 45hp, that does not pump water. I took it to a marine repair shop and they told me that they could not remove the lower unit to replace the impeller. After they left me with no suggestions, I am trying to remove the lower unit my self. I have removed the 3 nuts that appear to hold this thing on. and It drops down about a quarter inch and will not budge after that. I read some previous post about removing the shift/drive shaft cables, and some sort of rubber seal behind the water pump. Were is the water pump located? Or do I remove the the shift/drive shaft cable from the top of the engine?

It sounds like you are another driveshaft frozen in the powerhead victim.Best advice if that is true is remove the engine from the boat and stand it on its head.Spray penetrant in the split line between the gearcase and exhaust housing liberally, making sure as best you can that it is trickling down the driveshaft.Repeat as nessessary and hopefully this thing will come apart.Sometimes they do'nt.That part of your machine should have been inspected every couple of years. That way you would not be in this situation.Good luck.
