Memory foam for cabin cushions?

Hey guys,

The cushions of my Bayliner were shot when I first got it but my mom is a great seamstress (is that the term? being a plumber, "sewer" doesn't look right) and did an excellent of redoing the seat cushions with new padding and vinyl.

I was wondering, could 4'' memory foam be used to redo the cabin cushions? I'm thinking of using it to redo the other seats that haven't been redone yet but was wondering if the 4'' would be enough to comfortably sleep on. Then again the original, conventional foam isn't bad as it is (then again I'm 21).

What do you guys think?

HAHA I guess you could rig up a water bed...would be heavy though. I'd have a pump rigged up to drain it before getting underway and filling it back up at a marina :D

No No, It's already a water bed because you are floating on the water in the boat.

Depending on the density of the original foam you could add a 2 inch layer of memory foam over them. That would be really comfy!

Do you suppose then original foam (4'')with a thin layer of memory foam (2") on top would be better than say 6'' of pure memory foam?

i sell mattresses and have allmost an unlimited supply of memory foam....

a couple of things......memory foam is really heavy....really really heavy.

a king can weigh over 150 lbs with a 2 inch layer......

i was going to add it into the cushions that will make a king bed on the hull ext boat.....but the weight is severe....

memory foam is heat activated.....(hence the name tempure pedic....tempure stands for temprature)....the thick vinal will prevent its full benifets......

if you are not worried about the weight....you can go 2 inch thick over regular bedding foam...(or other)...and you will feel a slight benifit......but when boating....you will compress the cushon.....and instead of having 6 inch total cushion....you will only have a 4....so yer bumb will get beat when bouncing on wakes.

if you go 4 inches....(and that is really a lot of heavy foam)....it will be ok to sleep on (too soft for my liking)....but then you will have only 2 inches backing foam....so bouncing on wakes will pe at best painfull.

but all memory foams are not created equal....some really hard....some stupid soft....so choose wizely ;)

Re: Memory foam for cabin cushions?

btw......when you go over 4 inches of memory foam, (even tempure pedics are 3 inches and the rest bedding foam).your body heat will keep activating the foam....and you end up sleeping in a hole.....when you try to roll over you cant....its a real struggle....

thats why sterans and foster have a 1 inch layer of memory foam UNDER regular bedding foam....so it only partiually activates and you just feel soooo comfy

Oops has a good point.
We tried several memory foam toppers for our bed at home. The 2 inch ended up just right.
I think 1 or 2 inches over the original foam would do just about right.

We found a Serta king size 2 inch thick piece on Overstock or Amazon (can't recall which) for like 69 bucks...great deal!
A king size would make a bunch of boat cushions...:)
